On paper, your optical prescription may appear as a series of boxes labeled Sph, Cyl & Axis with corresponding numbers in the boxes or it may be just a series of numbers on an otherwise mostly blank piece of paper.
Whatever the case, these numbers can
be difficult if not impossible for most people to interpret.
A prescription can be written for near
sightedness or minus (myopia), far sightedness or plus (hyperopia), and astigmatism. Presbyopic (Bifocal) is an addition to existing plus or minus correction.
The above corrections are achieved by lens curvatures and grinds from both sides of the lenses. Bifocals can be lined or progressive and are simply an "add-on" to your regulare RX.
Distance correction is spherical and may be
plus or minus. Astigmatic correction is cylindrical and may be plus or minus. Cylinder correction is on the back side of the lens and is rotated to the correct axis according to your Dr's RX. Cylinder correction is perhaps the most difficult to get used to when it changes and is usually the culprit when a patient has a hard time with their RX the first couple of days.
The sphere, cylinder and the axis of the cylinder can all have effects on the thickness of your lenses as well as where the thickness is located in your lens.
Our job at Payton Optical as your optical experts, is to explain the ins and outs of your correction in the frame you chose and then help you make the best lens selection for your needs.
prism and bifocal correction! We can also compare your current RX with the
RX in an older pair you own.
Clocking the lens for the correct curvature, calipering lenses for the correct thickness and verifying that our lab has provided us with exactly what your prescription calls for guarantees that you'll get exactly the correction you need.
In the event your Dr. makes a mistake,
don't worry. We'll remake your glasses with
the correct prescription one time within the first
90 days.
